Ancienne famille lombarde, elle appartenait à la noblesse agraire féodale, dont l'ancêtre est un Gian Matteo, un homme d'une grande piété et d'une valeur militaire éprouvée, à qui Francesco I Sforza, duc de Milan, a accordé le manoir de Sant'Angelo Lodigiano , en compensation pour la vente du château de Pavie, où Gian Matteo avait été Castellano et préfet d'armes jusque-là.
