Uma família Lombard muito antiga, pertencia à nobreza agrária feudal, cujo progenitor encontrou um Gian Matteo, um homem de grande piedade e de comprovado valor militar, a quem Francesco I Sforza, duque de Milão, concedeu a mansão de Sant'Angelo Lodigiano , em troca da venda do castelo de Pavia, onde Gian Matteo havia sido Castellano e prefeito de armas até então. Gian Matteo, originalmente conhecido como "Bolognino", nascido em Bolonha em 1400 e falecido em Pavia em 6 de janeiro de 1480, parente das famílias Visconti e Sforza, era um cavaleiro em seu serviço e, com uma proclamação de 7 de maio de 1436, foi mencionado como "nobre família do duque" de Milão "e declarado herdeiro de Giovanni di Luigi Visconti. Castellano di Pavia, em 1447, foi investido conde de Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, adquiriu os feudos de Olevano e Brono e também se tornou senhor de Oleggio, a partir de 1477.
