Antichissimo casato lombardo, appartenne alla nobiltà feudale agraria, il cui capostipite, si rinviene un Gian Matteo, uomo di grande pietà e di provato valore militare, al quale, Francesco I Sforza, duca di Milano, concesse, il maniero di Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, in compenso della cessione del castello di Pavia, ove Gian Matteo era stato sino ad allora Castellano e Prefetto d'Armi. Gian Matteo, detto originariamente "Bolognino", nato a Bologna nel 1400 e morto a Pavia il 6 gennaio 1480, parente dei Visconti e degli Sforza, fu Cavaliere al loro servizio e con proclama del 7 maggio 1436 fu menzionato come "Nobile Famigliare del Duca di Milano" e dichiarato erede di Giovanni di Luigi Visconti. Castellano di Pavia, nel 1447 fu investito Conte di Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, acquistò i feudi di Olevano e Brono e divenne anche Signore di Oleggio, dal 1477. Francesco I Sforza, signore di Milano, il cui Casato aveva il nome
