E' evidente che il cognome della famiglia deriva dall'uso delle bombarde, conosciute fin dal 1216 quando i bolognesi assalirono Sant'Arcangelo. Il Bonifacio, nella storia di Treviso, aggiunge che la bombarda fu ritrovata in Germania, usata dapprima dai veneziani e, in seguito, da altri eserciti, ed accenna al Carrara che nel 1384 puntò dall'altro di una torre una bombarda contro Treviso. Attorno a quest'epoca l'arte di costruire bombarde era conosciuta dai veneziani, poichè in un documento del 28 settembre 1451 si trova scritto che in Venezia da lungo tempo maistro Martino dalle Ancore fedelissimo cittadino con molta intelligenza fabbricava bombarde di ogni sorte con molta perfezione. Come poi la denominazione di questa macchina militare abbia dato il nome alla famiglia Bombaro è cosa un pò difficile a stabilire, poichè una parte delle memorie di quelle lontane epoche è priva di ogni documentazione.
