Uguccione e Bonaguisa eram cavaleiros armados em 805 por Carlos Magno. Um Bonaguisi interveio na Cruzada em 1215 (a quinta cruzada foi proclamada por Inocêncio III no conselho de Latrão em 1215 e foi organizada por seu sucessor Honorius III. Em 1217 a expedição militar liderada por André II da Hungria, Leopoldo IV de Áustria e João de Brienne, rei de Jerusalém, e ocuparam Damietta no delta do Nilo em 1219.
