Famiglia originaria del Mugello, dove fu un tempo potentissima, tanto che alcuni storici la considerano una branca della stirpe degli Ubaldini. Erano, signori di Cignano, da cui hanno derivato il cognome, e si trovano ricordati nei ruoli della guerra dell'Arbia del 1260 e nel Libro delle condanne dei ghibellini, detto del Chiodo. Nel 1342 figurano fra i segnatari della pace col duca di Atene. Jacopo, Bartolommeo di Francesco intervennero all'altra pace stipulata fra Firenze e il duca di Milano nel 1353. Ebbero un primo priore nel 1475, in persona di Niccolò di Antonio, e un altro nel 1500: Antonio di Niccolò. Col secolo XVI cambiarono residenza, trasferendosi in Cintoia, dove vissero senza particolare splendore, tanto che nel 1832, quando chiesero di essere ascritti al patriziato fiorentino, il granduca concesse loro la reintegrazione alla semplice nobiltà, nonostante l'antichità e la posizione eminente che la famiglia aveva posseduto in antico.
