Antica ed assai nobile famiglia lombarda propagata, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Il commendator G.B. di Crollalanza riporta la blasonatura di questa famiglia nei volumi del suo Dizionario storico blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane. Il Litta nelle sua opera " Famiglie celebri italiane in foglio, e con lui gli autori concordemente, essere questa una nobile famiglia Lombarda. Nei primi decenni del 1100 in seguito ad un accordo, le quattro classi nobili e cittadine milanesi dei visconti, dei capitani ,dei valvassori (subfeudatari) e dei militi del popolo, costituirono, retto da consoli, il Comune Signorile di Milano che sottraendosi poco a poco alla giursdizione del vescovo separò nettamente i due poteri ecclesiastico e civile.
