Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria di Ferrara, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una forma dialettale del nome medioevale "Bonora", probabilmente, appartenuto, ad un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tal casato, venne, verosimilmente, fregiato del cavalierato, in seguito alla partecipazione, connotata da coraggio e virtù, nel 1509, di un Carlo Bonara, sotto i vessilli estensi, al celebre fatto d'arme della Battaglia di Polesella, nella quale l'esercito terrestre, sotto la diretta supervisione di Alfonso I, sconfisse la Repubblica Veneta. Anche successivamente, inoltre, la famiglia, sempre, si distinse per gli illustri personaggi, a cui diede i natali, tra i quali, ricordiamo: Cav. Carlo, ambasciatore estense, presso varie corti italiane ed europee, vivente in Ferrara, nel 1530; Guido, dottore in "utroque jure", vivente in Ferrara, nel 1534; D. Matteo, canonico, teologo e commissario apostolico, vivente in Ferrara,
