Ha comune storia con l'omonima famiglia dell'Emilia romagna. Gli Ottoboni ebbero l'onore dell'elevazione al pontificato di Pietro che fu Papa nel 1689 col nome di Alessandro VIII, che creò suo nipote Antonio duca di Fiano nel 1690. Da Marco, figlio di Antonio, nacquero due figlie: Maria Francesca erede del ducato, sposata nel 1731 a Pietro Gregorio e Maria Vittoria sposata al duca Serbelloni, letterata non comune. Marco surricordato, fu generale delle galere pontificie e marito di Giulia. Pietro (1667-1740) pronipote del pontefice, fu dal 1689 cardinale, ricchissimo, letterato e mecenate valoroso e raccoglitore di una pregevole pinacoteca e biblioteca. Morì in Conclave. La famiglia è oggi iscritta nell'Elenco ufficiale con i titoli di N. U. e N. D. patrizio veneto, mf. e duca d Fiano, mpr.; in persona del fu Marco e delle figlie fu Costanza, sposata ad Alessandro Cittadella Vigodarzere e Luisa Maria nel fu Carlo Rasponi Bonanzi.
