La famiglia trae origine da un Pirino ascritto al consiglio generale di Bologna nel 1347 e quindi al magistrato degli anziani nel 1351. Vanta questa casa 4 cardinali: Filippo nel 1572; Francesco nel 1621; Giacomo nel 1690 e Girolamo nel 1664. Ugo di Cristoforo fu cardinale nel 1565 e fu eletto papa col nome di Gregorio XVI. Si estinsero in questa famiglia altre due case pontificie quella dei Ludovisi (Gregorio XV, ed Ottoboni, Alessandro VIII). La famiglia conta fra le persone eminenti Ludovico, arcivescovo di Bologna, e cardinale potente e magnifico (1621). Niccolò di lui fratello che divenne per matrimonio principe di Venosa, principe sovrano di Piombino già della famiglia Appiani dal 1399 e morì nel 1664 in Sardegna come viceré. Orazio (1561-1640), fratello di Gregorio XV, fu duca di Fiano e Zagarolo, generale di S. R. Chiesa, e nel 1623, principe di Valtellina (Degli Ottoboni vedi questo nome). Antonio
