Fino dal 1347 Pirrino fu ascritto al Consiglio generale della Repubblica di Bologna, e nel 1351 al Magistrato degli Anziani. Vanta questa casa quattro Cardinali di S. R. Chiesa; Filippo nel 1572, Francesco nel 1621, Giacomo nel 1690, e Girolamo nel 1664. Quest'ultimo fu Arciv. di Bologna, come un Cristoforo suo antenato lo era stato di Ravenna nel 1578. La maggior gloria però di questa famiglia fu Ugo di Cristoforo, Cardinale nel 1565, eletto Papa nel 1572 sotto il nome di Gregorio XIII. Ebbe questa famiglia il marchesato di Vignuola; il ducato di Sora, di Fano e di Arech; il principato di Piombino, dell'isola dell'Elba e di Venosa. Cambo, maritò Lazarina sua figliuola in Benassai di Monte Orsini. Dragone fù Ambasciatore al Vescovo per causa del Castello di Casverno.
