Famiglia illustre dell'Italia settentrionale che disputò per lungo tempo alla casa di Savoja la signoria del Piemonte, ed ebbe dominio in Casale, in Tessalonica e in Gerusalemme. Il primo che si conosca di questa casa è un Aleramo che ebbe il marchesato di Monferrato dall'Imperatore Ottone nel 967, ed i suoi discendenti vi regnarono fino al 1305. Fra i più rimarchevoli è da segnalare Guglielmo detto il vecchio, il quale seguì l'Imperatore Corrdo III nella seconda crociata e si coprì di gloria nel 1147; Ranieri, figlio del precedente, il quale per aver sposato una figliuola di Emanuele Commeno Imperatore di Costantinopoli ne ebbe in dote il regno di Tessalonica nel 1179 che trasmise ai suoi discendenti; Guglielmo V, uno degli eroi della terza crociata, si meritò per il suo valore il soprannome di lunga spada, ed avendo sposato Sibilla sorella di Baldovino il lebbroso re di Gerusalemme ne ebbe in
