Antica ed assai nobile famiglia toscana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, suo capostipite fu Bonifazio che, tra gli altri figli, ebbe Ildebrando, monaco famosissimo con il nome di papa Gregorio VIII, allorché fu assunto al pontificato (1073-1083). La famiglia fu tra le prime di Firenze e le tombe dei loro membri furono in S. Croce. Il Villani nelle sue cronache dice che anticamente "Poggibonzi" si chiamasse Poggio Bonizi. Le antiche memorie di famiglia vogliono che ciò fosse perché appartenente alla famiglia suddetta. Nel 1500 circa, per lotte di partiti, la famiglia dovette emigrare a Tolfa (Lazio), ove pose stabile dimora. Il Cav. Egidio fu consultore pontificio nel 1840-1860, per la sua munificenza nel costruire edifici sacri in Fabriano, per Breve di Gregorio XVI nel 1838.
