Familia siciliana muy antigua e ilustre, de cuyos orígenes no hay cierta información; se extendió a lo largo de los siglos, en diferentes regiones de Italia, donde se invirtió con las oficinas más importantes. La cognición es anterior al siglo XVII y debe derivar de una forma dialectal del nombre medieval Bonora, probablemente traída por el progenitor.
