Fra San Pietro in Casale e Pieve di Cento, in prossimità dell'argine destro del Reno e precisamente all'intorno di Massumatico e di Galliera, sul confine delle due provincie di Bologna e di Ferrara, il conte Antonio Aldini, ministro segretario di Stato del primo regno d'Italia, acquistò qua e là dei fondi buoni e cattivi, asciutti e umidi, ma in vicinanza fra loro, di modo che a poco a poco, per frazioni riunite, formò una tenuta, che egli, con opportuni lavori, cominciò a bonificare. Dall'Aldini la comprò al principio del 1812 Napoleone I erigendola in ducato, e Giuseppina di Beauharnais la portò poscia, per ragioni dotali, in dominio della real casa di Svezia, da cui nel 1837 fu venduta a Raffaele De Ferrari, il quale ne migliorò la conformazione, rendendola più regolare mediante nuovi acquisti di terreni alla periferia.
