Família nobre e antiga que os genealogistas fazem provir de um fidalgo português do século XII de nome Rodrigo Annes, natural de Santarém, que se notabilizou em França ao serviço do Rei Filipe Augusto II que o enviou a defender a cidade de Bourges dos hereges. Aí se houve de forma tão heróica que ficou chamado O Cavaleiro de Bourges, nome que em Portugal, para onde mais tarde regressou fixando-se em Torre de Moncorvo, foi aportuguesado para de Borges. A bordadura de flores de lis das suas armas seria uma alusão às do país onde praticou tais feitos. Seu filho João Rodrigues Borges, foi Senhor das Honras de Calvos e Ourilhe, e casou com D.Catarina Lopes, Senhora da Vila de Álvaro. Deles foram trinetos João Gonçalves Borges, Alcaide-Mor de Santarém, e Senhor de Alva e outras Vilas que D.Afonso V lhe confirmou em 1489; Diogo Gonçalves Borges, pai de Gomes
