Antica famiglia lombarda, con residenza in Brescia, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, discendente dal Capitano della Pieve, tal Mozzi da Bergamo, che fu nominato nel corso del X secolo a questo incarico e che trasmise il proprio titolo agli eredi. Il nome di cotal famiglia è strettamente legato all'un tempo comune autonomo, ma oggi frazione del comune di Cazzago San Martino, nel territorio della Franciacorta, Bornato, ove in epoca tardo comunale, ebbe in proprietà esclusiva il Castello, che fece riedificare tra il 1266 ed il 1270. I Bornato, inoltre, scesero come propria residenza di Campagna Villa Monterossa, adagiata sull'omonimo colle che domina Bornato. Tuttavia, nel 1562, il nobile Lattanzio Bornati cedette il castello e tutti i fondi presenti in paese alla famiglia Gandini. La famiglia tentò anche di insediarsi in Bagnolo, infiltrandosi in Poncarale e ponendo la propria residenza "super Dosso seu castro de Poncarali", divenendo così più tardi, proprietaria
