Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria di Genova, che ebbe il titolo di conte, con successione nei mpr. da S. S. Pio IX il 18 febbraio 1870, confermato con Regio Decreto motu-proprio 10 maggio 1896 e RR. LL. PP. 16 novembre 1896. Risulta iscritta nel Libro d'Oro, in persona di Giambattista, del figlio Francesco e del nipote Francesco Carlo Leopoldo, ambasciatore di S. M., decorato di numerose, altissime onorificenze. tale cognominizzazione dovrebbe derivare dal termine "bottaro" o "bottaio", ossia un particolare falegname che costruiva o riparava botti le botti per il vino, forse mestiere del capostipite. Appartennero a questa casata membri di elevate virtù che, spesso, indossarono vesti ecclesiastiche. Si ricordano, infatti, gli Arci-preti Gregorio e Filippo, che firmarono "la petizione di novemila sacerdoti italiani a S.S. Pio Papa IX ed ai vescovi con esso uniti", nel 1862; Bartolomeo, spesso ricordato come "uomo di elevatissimo spirito", ed il professor Luigi Bottaro,
