Antigua y muy noble familia de Parma, donde ya en el siglo XIII estaba muy florecida, tanto que una hermana del papa Inocencio IV (conde Fieschi di Lavagna) se casó con un Boterius, según el testimonio del cronista Salimbene. Ugo, su hijo, era el poder de Pavía y participó con Federico II en el asedio de Parma en 1247: "et primus qui venit fuit dominus Ugo Boterius civis Parm.
