Ancient and noble French family, of clear and ancestral virtue, with several branches in Belgium, Luxemburg, Swiss and Germany, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. Originally known as Bourgard or Bourcard, the family name was in time also transcribed as Burckhardt. We actually have reason to believe that this was the family's original surname and that therefore it is actually a branch of the illustrious Burckhardt House, a family of the Basel patriciate that descends from Christoph (Stoffel) Burckhardt (1490–1578), a merchant in cloth and silk originally from Münstertal, Black Forest, who received Basel citizenship in 1523, and became a member of the Grand Council of Basel-Stadt in 1553. Christoph Burckhardt married Ottilie Mechler in 1518 and in 1539 Gertrud Brand, daughter of Basel mayor Theodor Brand.
