Sin dal 1100 viveva in Novi una famiglia denominata Berengeri: corruzioni dialettali trasformarono in epoche posteriori Berengeri in Bragheris, Barrueris, Berveris, Berverio ed infine in Borghero tuttora fiorente nella terra stessa; dai Bragheri trassero origine i Cattaneo, da cui i dogi di Genova, nonché le diramazioni che si diffusero dapprima nel Vogherese indi nel Tortonese e ovviamente, nei territori della repubblica ligure. Apre difatti la cronologia della famiglia un Guido Bragherius che nel giugno 1181 appare nell'elenco dei contribuenti il fodro ed il giogatico nell'Oltrepò pavese ed in Lomellina; i consoli di Tortona immettono il 16 dicembre 1202 il minastero di S. Eufemia nel possesso dei beni in Viguzzolo di ... de Bragherius non meglio identificato e di Giovanni Bussengo; Jacobus Bragherius è teste in atto del 5 ottobre 1252 con cui l'arciprete della pieve di Braida riconosce di possedere in conume con Guidotto Vassalllo le decime di Corrutela
