Due famiglie di questo nome ma distinte l'una dall'altra, hanno fiorito in Cesena da tempo anteriore al XVII secolo. Dal luogo di loro abitazione si dissero, l'una dei Serri, l'altra delle Tavernelle. Quest'ultima originaria di Rimini, aveva avuto in Cesena umili principi esercitandovi l'arte della tintoria e del fabbro ferraio. Ma in poco tempo seppe levarsi in così alta posizioni che nel 1721 meritò di essere iscritta alla nobiltà cesenate. Appartenne a questa casa mons. Giambattista vescovo di Sarsina, poi arcivescovo di Nisibonomo, assai erudito e scrittore di merito autore di alcune opere storiche, filosofiche e religiose. Con lui si estinguevano nel 1736 i B. delle Tavernelle la cui eredità passò nelle famiglie Masini e Venturelli. L'altra famiglia dei Serri proveniva da Sarsina, ed a lei appartiene quel Giovan Angelo che fu prima vescovo di Imola e quindi pontefice col nome di papa Pio VI. Con la morte di questo
