Dos familias de este nombre pero distintas entre sí, han florecido en Cesena durante mucho tiempo antes del siglo XVII. Desde el lugar donde vivían, dijeron, uno de los Serri, el otro de la Tavernelle. Este último, originario de Rimini, había tenido principios humildes en Cesena al practicar el arte del teñido y el herrero. Pero en poco tiempo supo ascender a posiciones tan altas que en 1721 merecía ser inscrita en la nobleza de Cesena. Mons. Obispo Giambattista de Sarsina, luego arzobispo de Nisibonomo, autor muy erudito y meritorio de algunas obras históricas, filosóficas y religiosas. Con él, el B. de Tavernelle murió en 1736, cuya herencia pasó a las familias Masini y Venturelli. La otra familia Serri provenía de Sarsina, y a la que pertenece Giovan Angelo, quien fue primero obispo de Imola y luego pontífice con el nombre del Papa Pío VI. Con la muerte de este
