Familia muy antigua y noble de Emilia Romagna, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. De sus orígenes no hay información cierta, se cree que es croata. El apellido es anterior al siglo XIII y debería derivar del nombre latino tardío Brattus, derivado del celta Brath o incluso directamente de este último. Los primeros rastros de él están en Sipar donde en 1314 era el señor feudal del castillo Zanino o Zilino di Rebecco, un hombre de Cremona, militar en Capodistria. A su muerte, Sipar pasa a su hijo Giovanni, quien en su testamento lo asigna a los hijos de Almerigo Bratti. Los Bratti, tras la muerte de Giovanni di Rebecco, piden el reconocimiento del obispo de Trieste Pedrazzani, que sin embargo lo niega.
