Famille très ancienne et noble d'Émilie-Romagne, qui s'est répandue au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. De ses origines, il n'y a pas d'informations certaines, on pense qu'il est croate. Le nom de famille est antérieur au XIIIe siècle et devrait dériver du nom latin tardif Brattus, dérivé du celtique Brath ou même directement de ce dernier. Les premières traces de lui sont à Sipar où en 1314 il était le seigneur féodal du château Zanino ou Zilino di Rebecco, un homme de Crémone, militaire à Capodistria. À sa mort, Sipar passe à son fils Giovanni, qui dans son testament l'attribue aux enfants d'Almerigo Bratti. Les Bratti, après la mort de Giovanni di Rebecco, demandent la reconnaissance de l'évêque de Trieste Pedrazzani, qui la nie cependant. Quoi qu'il en soit, les Bratti occupent toujours le château et se mettent en 1342 sous la protection de Capodistria, provoquant le début
