Ele recebeu o nome de uma terra homônima, localizada na França, no departamento de Aube, da qual possuía o senhorio com um título em comum. Até 1308, obteve o domínio supremo de Atenas, convertido pelos latinos em ducado. Há lembranças em Lecce em 1201, nas quais Gualtieri III, conde de Brenna, foi o primeiro conde de Lecce. Ele foi sucedido no condado por seu filho Gualtiero IV, então Ugo, que foi o primeiro duque de Atenas. Gualtieri VI, último conde de Lecce, era tenente em Florença do duque da Calábria. Fundou a antiga igreja de S. Croce em Lecce em 1355 e morreu em 1356 sem sucessão. Era o costume das famílias mais antigas, que após a queda do Império Romano, naquele dilúvio dos bárbaros, tendo seus sobrenomes, assim como seus estudos, e outras coisas bonitas perdidas e deixadas apenas com nomes simples, desenhavam seus sobrenomes , e sua família
