Nel secolo XV parecchi personaggi, appartenenti al casato degli A., versavano nelle arti belle. Oltre all'A. da Messina (1447-1496), che diffuse per l'Italia il colorimento ad olio, e che a Venezia lo si ricorda per le sue ammirevoli tavole in cui rivela forti qualità di ritrattista, è da rammentare l'A. da Pisa che nel 1475 ritrattò Alvise Pasqualini. Non si conoscono però quali rapporti di parentela corressero tra l'A. di Messina ed i fratelli Giacomo e Simone fu A. da "Sicilia" creati cittadini veneziani l'11 settembre 1473. Costoro vivevano in un'epoca felice: Venezia doviziosa per commerci e per egregie opere d'arte segnava un'era buona e prospera. Forse tale cognome, vezzeggiativo di Antonio, venne assunto da qualcuno dei tre discendenti di Aliotto Caopenna, Signore di Lesina, in Dalmazia, eletto cittadino veneziano.
