Ancient and very noble family from Catalonia, which also spread to Italy, with conspicuous settlements in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and in Piedmont. According to some notable heraldists, there is another noble branch with this surname, originally known as Rio and originally from Veneto, whose surname has changed over time.
