Antigua y muy noble familia procedente de Cataluña, que también se extendió a Italia, con notables asentamientos en el Reino de las Dos Sicilias y en el Piamonte. Según algunos heraldistas notables, existe otra rama noble con este apellido, originalmente conocida como Rio y originaria de Veneto, cuyo apellido ha cambiado con el tiempo. La rama familiar tenía su residencia principal en Padua donde obtuvo el título de nobleza, posteriormente confirmado por el Senado del Véneto en 1626. Unos años más tarde esta rama fue adornada con el título de conde. La República de Génova también quiso agregarlo a la ciudadanía y la nobleza genoveses.
