Questa famiglia, originaria di Centaura, ora Santa Giulia, presso Chiavari, si stabilì a Genova nel XIV secolo, dedicandosi in origine al commercio. Successivamente fu ammessa alla nobiltà e ascritta all'Albergo Salvaghi, nel 1528. Nel 1607 fu ammessa alla nobiltà del Sacro Romano Impero. Più tardi il ramo primogenito ottenne il patriziato e fornì alla Dominante un Senatore (Giovan Battista), quindi Doge, il Serenissimo Bernardo, il quale fu probabilmente l'ultimo ad usare il titolo di Re di Corsica. Il ramo della famiglia di Brescia raggiunse questa città durante la permanenza dell'abate Carlo Innocenzo, il celebre Arcade, che soggiornò quivi nella seconda e terza decade del secolo XVIII. Arsenio Giovanni (1817-1893), gioielliere, viaggiatore e storico, ottenne il 10 Dicembre 1859 da Milos I Obrenovic, Sovrano di Serbia, la concessione del titolo di Grof (Conte) per sé e per i suoi discendenti.
