E' una delle più antiche e potenti famiglia della città di Novara, che unitamente ai Brusati ed ai Cavallazzi ebbero a volta a volta il dominio della loro città. Il nome è strettamente legato alla storia di Novara, e più ancora alle fazioni dei secoli XIII e XIV, nelle quali ebbero parte preponderante. Già nel secolo XII sostengono in Novara le più importanti cariche cittadine ed il loro nome si riscontra fra i consoli del comune, fra i consoli di giustizia e fra i canonici ed i vescovi. Notevolissimo fu quel Guglielmo che, eletto vescovo di Novara, rappresentò i Novaresi alla dieta di Roncaglia del 1158, e che due anni dopo fornì all'imperatore Federico Barbarossa balestriere ed arciere.
