Questa famiglia de Cancellieri, non solo era nobilissima in Pistoia, ma delle prime di Toscana. In un istromento rogato in Velletri del 1587, si legge che Nicola di Pietro Bubalis fu con sei altri Gentiluomini Romani mandati dal Senato per ordinare lo stato di quella città, vennero 400 anni dopo ad abitare in Roma, abbandonando molti la patria per le disposizioni de' guelfi e ghibellini detti poscia bianchi e neri che regnavano particolarmente in quella città, ritenendo per qualche tempo il cognome di Cancellieri, per infin che uno di questa famiglia, la quale qui anche era copiosa, fu mentovato al battesimo per nome Bufalo, i figliuoli del quale essendo stati in buon numero, si fecero chiamare per cognome col nome del padre, ponendo sopra li scacchi arme antica di Cancellieri una testa di Bufalo con un motto: Ordo, dinotanto qualche loro impresa. Il Monaldeschi nel suo Diario, dell'anno 1327, scrive
