Famiglia di antica e nobile tradizione, originaria della Romagna. Il commendator G.B. di Crollalanza riporta la blasonatura di questa famiglia nei volumi del suo Dizionario storico blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane. Altro ramo. Luigi fu fregiato da Pio VII del titolo di conte, ed Andrea, di lui figlio, decorato delle insegne di San Gregorio Magno da Gregorio XVI, benemeriti ambedue della patria e dell'industria serica. Altra famiglia alzò per arma. D'azzurro, al destrocherio al naturale sostenente un'ancora di nero, accostata in capo da un sole raggiante d'oro, accostata in capo da un sole raggiante d'oro, ed un punta da onde, marine al naturale. La presenza dell'arma e del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia Buffoni ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta dalla casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti che venivano scritti sui vessilli
