Dal "Cartulario della Berardenga" esistente nella Biblioteca Comunale di Siena, al documento CCCLXXXV (Bollettino Senese di Storia Patria, an. 1918, fasc. II, pag. 186 e riferentesi a un atto del 1097) si rileva che questa famiglia discende direttamente dal marchese Ugo di Toscana, il "Gran Barone" vicario in Italia dell'Imperatore Ottone III e fondatore della Badia di Firenze. Per altri questa famiglia viene da Linari, in Valdelsa, trovandosi ricordato negli antichi documenti un Ubertello in un atto compiuto da suo figlio Bulgarino nel 1126. Questo, nel 1100, aveva avuto il permesso di alzare una torre, che era allora privilegio concesso solo alle famiglie dei Grandi. Ildebrandino di Bulgarino fu camerlingo della Repubblica di Siena nel 1212, mentre suo figlio era già stato console nel 1207 e 1209. Simone fu dei Consigli nel 1241 e rettore dello Spedale della Scala nel 1284; dei Consigli fu anche suo figlio Gheri nel 1309.
