Cette famille noble est originaire de la maison des marquis Santi de Ferrare (originaires de Volterra) et est venue à Modène de Bologne, où il avait sa chambre et jouissait de la dignité de sénateur municipal de Ferrare a témoigné qu'un Teodoro Santi jouissait des titres de patricien de Ferrare et de marquis transmissible à toute descendance mâle légitime. Le 13 décembre 1725, le sénat de Bologne accorde le même titre de noble bolognais, titre reconfirmé à la famille par décret du légat du 23 février 1749. Le titre de patriciat de Bologne trouve son fondement dans la réforme de ce sénat le 8 mars 1777. Girolamo di Bartolomeo di Teodoro qui reçut le titre de marquis en 1822, figure inscrite dans le Livre d'or de la ville de Bologne (1er janvier 1822).
