La famiglia è originaria di Montesanto, oggi Potenza Picena, di qui andò a stabilirsi a Macerata dove nel 1496 fu ascritta alla Nobiltà. Le prime notizie che di essa si hanno risalgono al secolo XIII ed è tradizione che fosse una diramazione dell'omonima di Firenze altrimenti detta "Buonnacorsi". Simone di Filippo acquistò il feudo di Castel S. Pietro nella Sabina a cui era annessso il titolo di conte e ne ottenne l'investitura per se e tutti i suoi discendenti maschi da papa Clemente XI. Nel 1677 la famiglia ottenne la nobiltà di Bologna; fu poi ascritta tra le patrizie coscritte di Roma essendo stata inclusa tra le "sessanta" nominate dalla Bolla "Urbem Roman" di Benedetto XIV il 4 gennaio 1746; e con diploma di Firenze.
