L'Altimari crede che la famiglia B. di Calabria discenda da quella di Roma, ove era illustre per nobili parentele e dotti personaggi. Il primo del quale si abbia notizia in Tropea è un Giovanni-Nicola, padre del famoso Quinzio. E' annotata nella numerazione del 1567; credesi sia stata aggregata nel 1560 alla nobiltà tropeana. Il Leoni la crede originaria di Maida, donde nel 1506 venne in Tropea per non sottostare al feudale dominio dei Caracciolo che ne acquistarono l'imperio per regalo di Giovanna II, e da essi regie dopo di aver lottato invano per fare allontanare quel giogo dalla loro patria. Illustrarono questa casa due uomini dotti in sommo grado. Quinzio, cattedratico nell'Università di Napoli e protomedico del Regno, ebbe la ventura di essere chiamato a curare la salute di S. Pio V e di Gregorio XIII. Autore di varie opere filosofiche, morendo legò il ricco patrimonio ai P. P. Gesuiti
