El nombre de esta familia, muy influyente, aparece por primera vez en 1122 cuando, después de algunas décadas de autonomía municipal, Tortona quería escapar permanentemente de la autoridad imperial siguiendo el ejemplo de otras ciudades, en primer lugar Milán a la que no tardó mucho en saberlo. También un enemigo de Pavía.
