Il titolo di principi di Butera fu concesso la prima volta in Sicilia, come titolo più elevato nobiliare, dal re Filippo II nel 1563 alla famiglia Branciforte, succeduta nel 1540 nella signoria feudale di Butera e suo territorio, nel Val di Noto, che dal 1392 era stata concessa a Ugo de Ademar de Santapau, di origine catalana. Pertanto, secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, un ramo dei Branciforte iniziò a cognominarsi Butera. Fabrizio Branciforte principe di Butera e primo titolato di Sicilia, grande di Spagna ereditario di prima classe e decorato dell'ordine del Toson d'Oro, sposò una Dorotea Barrese, per la quale fu marchese di Militello e principe di Pietraperzia; un Francesco Branciforte e Butera, di lui figlio, fu marito di una Giovanna d'Austria, figlia di Giovanni, nato da Carlo V imperatore; un Salvatore Branciforte e Butera fu consigliere di Stato, tenente generale comandante dei volontari siculi, cavaliere del S. Ferdinando
