Le titre de princes de Butera fut accordé pour la première fois en Sicile, en tant que titre noble le plus élevé, par le roi Philippe II en 1563 à la famille Branciforte, qui succéda en 1540 à la seigneurie féodale de Butera et de son territoire, dans le Val di Noto, qui depuis 1392, il avait été accordé à Ugo de Ademar de Santapau, d'origine catalane. Ainsi, selon ce qui nous est transmis, une branche de la famille Branciforte a commencé à être surnommée Butera. Fabrice Branciforte prince de Butera et premier titré de Sicile, grand d'Espagne héréditaire de première classe et décoré de l'ordre de la Toison d'or, épousa une Dorotea Barrese, dont il fut marquis de Militello et prince de Pietraperzia ; un Francesco Branciforte et Butera, son fils, était le mari d'une Giovanna d'Autriche, fille de Giovanni, née de l'empereur Charles V ; a Salvatore Branciforte
