Non è nota la provenienza della famiglia né la precisa località d'origine, poiché già nel '200 i Butteri, anticamente detti Buterius, sono simultaneamente presenti con uffici preminenti in Alessandria, Tortona e Viguzzolo, località tuttavia poco discoste. Dal Cartario Alessandrino del Gasparolo un Calvus Buterius appare, come teste, in atto del 12 giugno 1188 relativo alla vendita di un manso situato tra Marengo e Tortona; il 29 agosto 1203 Anselmo Buterius sottoscrive come teste l'atto di conciliazione del comune di Alessandria col Marchese Guglielmo di Monferrato, ed il 18 settembre dello stesso anno è teste nell'atto d'investitura del feudo di Sezzé a favore del comune di Alessandria. A Tortona, Pili Buterius è credendario ed il 31 luglio 1210 sottoscrive l'atto di sottomissione di Assalito di Mongiardino a detto comune nella persona del podestà Ottone Mandello; Albertino del consiglio, il 10 ottobre 1234 sottoscrive gli atti che nominano un procuratore e, da
