Non occorre prestar fede a questa tradizione, che non può in alcun modo documentarsi, per stabilire con certezza l'antica origine di questa famiglia che si diramò in ogni parte d'Italia e particolarmente a Verona, Padova, Venezia, Ferrara, Ravenna ed anche in Piemonte. Un Giovanni, che si era stabilito in Baviera nel 1274 militò sotto le insegne del Visconti, Signore di Milano; fu padre di Nicolò e questi a sua volta generò Federico, generale di Alberto e Mastino della Scala, che stabilì in Verona un ramo della famiglia.
