Ancienne famille, bourgeois de Runes. Jean vivant en 1730, était à cette date fermier du prieuré des Bondons. Le 9 mai 1749, il acheta à Claude Letellier, seigneur de Pagnet, le domaine de la Fare, près des Bondons. Il épousa, le 25 avril 1705, Jeanne Richard, dont il eut: 1° Jean-Pierre; 2° Catherine, mariée à Bruno de Pépin, seigneur de la Cham. Jean-Pierre, sieur de la Fare, avocat en Parlement, épousa, le 4 avril 1761, Catherine de Montfaucon, dont il eut: Charles-Jean-Pierre, seigneur de la Fare, chevau-léger de la garde du Roi en 1779. En 1814, il était officier supérieur de la maison du Roi et chevalier de Saint-Louis. Il épousa, le 22 mars 1781, Marguerite-Suzanne de Bruges. A partir du 1814, cette famille, ayant astensiblement porté le titre de marquis de la Fare, a subit un retentissant procès en usurpation de nom et titre, intenté par le cardinal et le marquis de la Fare, de l'ancienne et illustre famille de ce nom en Languedoc. Un jugement du Tribunal de Florac, confirmé par la Cour d'Appel de Nîmes, le 7 juillet 1829, maintint cette famille dans le droit de joindre à son nom celui de la Fare, mais lui interdit de porter ce dernier nom seul, ou précédé seulement de titres ou distinctions honorifiques.
