La famiglia si distacca dal gran ceppo dei C. nel secolo XVI con Carlo, di Ottaviano, primo conte di Rocca d'Arazzo e signore di Osasco. Osasco fu eretto in contea a favore del di lui figlio Girolamo Clemente nel 1627; ma dopo la riunione dei feudi ordinata da re Vittorio Amedeo II, l'investiture furono date col titolo signorile. Il figlio di Girolamo Clemente, conte Carlo Amedeo, morto a Torino il 14 maggio 1682, sposò nel 1670 Giulia Maria Caterina Malabaila di Cantarana, e ciò fu cagione che la discendenza assumesse il cognome attuale e succedesse nel feudo di Cantarana. Fra i discendenti, degni di memoria: Policarpo, detto il cavaliere di Cantarana, governatore del principe di Carignano e grande di corona; Teobaldo, cavaliere dell'Ordine supremo, fratello del conte Enrico, da cui gli attuali rappresentanti della famiglia.
