Creemos que las primeras noticias de esta familia provienen de un antiguo pergamino que escapó inesperadamente de la destrucción y los incendios: es una lista que Montemerlo reproduce en la p. 15 de la "Historia de Tortona" relacionada con las familias tortonias más antiguas y nobles que vivieron en 1140 (ver también Anales I, 156). No hay noticias de dónde se refugiaron los caquis durante las dos destrucciones de la ciudad de 1155 y 1163 y en las que reaparecieron en la vida pública después de más de medio siglo a principios de los años 1200. Sin embargo, más autores nos informan que en este intervalo Guglielmo Cachi, el hombre santo y piadoso fue abad en 1158 (y no en 1084 como afirma Carnival en repetidas ocasiones en su "Historia de la diócesis de Tortona" y en "Ilustres hombres tortoneses", así como el sauce en los anales) de la abadía
