Ancienne et très noble famille génoise, y arriva avec un Caffaro de Constantinople, d'où sortirent une longue série de consuls et d'ambassadeurs. Un autre Caffaro a écrit les Annales de sa patrie ; un Melchior était capitaine de l'armée contre les Pisans et consul de la République ; Angelotto et Rinaldo ont signé la paix entre les Génois et les Pisans. En 1230, un Andrea fut ambassadeur auprès du roi d'Aragon et un Giacomo transplanta sa famille dans le royaume de Naples. Cristoforo, à la fin du Xe VIe siècle, était gouverneur de Trani et là, il fut attribué au patriciat. Gideone obtient en 1698 le fief de Riardo (Terra di Lavoro), qui reçoit le titre de duc le 20 octobre 1731. Cette querelle est restée dans la famille jusqu'à l'abolition de la féodalité avec un Melchior qui en fut le dernier propriétaire. En plus du titre susmentionné de duc
