Uma família genovesa antiga e muito nobre, chegou lá com um Caffaro de Constantinopla, de onde saíram uma longa série de cônsules e embaixadores. Outro Caffaro escreveu os Anais de sua terra natal; Melchiorre era capitão do exército contra os pisanos e cônsul da República; Angelotto e Rinaldo assinaram a paz entre os genoveses e os pisani. Em 1230, Andrea foi embaixadora do rei de Aragão e Giacomo transplantou sua família para o Reino de Nápoles. Christopher, no declínio do décimo sexto século, era governador de Trani e era atribuído ao Patriciado de lá. Gedeone obteve em 1698 o feudo de Riardo (Terra di Lavoro), que recebeu o título de duque em 20 de outubro de 1731. Esse feudo permaneceu na família até a abolição do feudalismo com um Melchiorre que foi o último proprietário. Além do título de duque de Riardo, já mencionado, à família em questão, por sucessão
