Antica ed assai nobile famiglia genovese, ivi giunta con un Caffaro di Costantinopoli, da cui sono usciti una lunga serie di consoli ed ambasciatori. Un altro Caffaro scrisse gli Annali della propria patria; un Melchiorre fu capitano dell'armata contro i Pisani e console della Repubblica; Angelotto e Rinaldo firmarono la pace tra Genovesi e Pisani. Nel 1230, un Andrea fu ambasciatore al Re di Aragona ed un Giacomo trapiantò la propria famiglia nel Regno di Napoli. Cristoforo, sul calare del secolo decimo sesto, fu governatore di Trani ed ivi venne ascritto al Patriziato. Gedeone ottenne nel 1698 il feudo di Riardo (Terra di Lavoro), cui venne infisso in data 20 ottobre 1731 il titolo di duca. Tale feudo rimase in famiglia sino all'abolizione della feudalità con un Melchiorre che ne fu l'ultimo intestatario. Oltre al suddetto titolo di duca di Riardo, alla famiglia in questione, per successione del ramo primogenito
