La nobilissima famiglia Scarampi del Cairo, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, si è divisa in molti rami, le cui cognominizzazioni, pur avendo matrice comune con il nucleo principale, differirono parzialmente e così ebbero origine le famiglie Cairo, Caira, Cairi etc. Riporteremo, però, la storia della originale prosapia, poiché è da essa che tutto ebbe inizio. Fu essa un'importante famiglia astigiana di orientamento ghibellino. Furono inizialmente banchieri nelle Casane astigiane a Genova e poi in Francia e in Belgio. Alcune tra le più antiche memorie risalgono a Guglielmo, che fu podestà di Genova verso la metà del secolo XIII, e che ebbe per nipote Antonio, che fu investito di Mombarcelli il 19 maggio 1329 dall'imperatore Lodovico il Bavaro e che, avendo acquistato da Emanuele Traversagni porzioni di Vinchio, ne fu investito dallo stesso imperatore con diploma di pari data con i feudi di Montaldo e Monbarone. Procreò costui Giovannone, Oddone, Giacomo, Matteo
