Il cognome di questa Casata rivela la sua antica origine dalla Calabria. Si vuole che essa fosse una delle famiglie calabresi invitate, nel secolo XIV, da Carlo II d'Angiò a stabilirsi a Lucera per ripopolare la città, rimasta quasi deserta dopo la cacciata dei Saraceni. Verosimilmente, in epoca successiva, un ramo di questa famiglia venne a mutare il cognome in Caraprese, Caroprese e Carapresa, e godette nobiltà in Lucera e S. Nicandro Garganico. Famoso resta quel Cavaliere governatore militare di Candia che nel 1571 combatté a Lepanto. Un ramo da Lucera si portò a S. Nicandro Garganico e da esso discese Giulio Antonio Luigi Maria Calaba, nato a Roma il 10.11.1896. Valoroso combattente, fu insignito di Croce al Merito e di una medaglia di bronzo; fu creato inoltre Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia e Cavaliere Ufficiale di S. Stefano d'Ungheria.
